Protest in Italy
On January 18, 2007 students protesters hold a banner stating “NO new bases at Dal Molin nor anywhere else” during a protest against the U.S. military base in Vicenza, Italy. Italian Premier Romano Prodi announced that Italy’s government would not oppose the expansion of a U.S. military base in the northern city of Vicenza, despite protests by local residents (and some of his own political allies). The U.S. base in Vicenza has approximately 2,600 active duty military personnel. The expansion at the nearby Dal Molin airport would allow the military to move to Italy four U.S. military battalions now based in Germany, adding another 1,600 active duty personnel (AP photo.
